RIP: Diaspora Founder Ilya Zhitomirskiy

RIP: Ilya Zhitomirskiy, one of the four founders of Facebook-alternative social network Diaspora, has died at age 22.

Zhitomirskiy, an NYU grad, founded Diaspora last April with three classmates. The social network was funded via Kickstarter, racking up $200,000+ in just over a month, including a donation from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

His death appears to be a suicide, according to the San Francisco Police Department, but the medical examiner’s office has yet to make a final determination.

Zhitomirskiy’s Diaspora colleagues have posted a memorial photo on the front page of the site.
