Follow Up of the Day: Mysterious Chinese Desert Structures May Be Satellite Calibration Targets

Follow Up of the Day: Some strange patterns spotted in Google Earth images of the Gobi Desert may be calibration targets for Chinese spy satellites, according to a researcher at Arizona State University’s Mars Space Flight Facility.

ASU’s Jonathon Hill says the grids of zigzagging lines look nearly identical to the targets U.S. spy satellites used in the ’60s to orient themselves in space.

The other structures, including several concentric circles with what appear to be aircraft at the center and a series of squares scattered with debris, could still be military testing facilities of some kind.

The structures are all located in an area known to be used for building military and space equipment, and some of the sites are just 100 miles from the headquarters and launchpads of China’s space program.
