Marty McFly’s Original Girlfriend of the Day

Marty McFly's Original Girlfriend of the Day

Marty McFly’s Original Girlfriend of the Day: Back to the Future fans know that Michael J. Fox wasn’t the original Marty McFly, but there was another, less-publicized casting change at the same time Fox replaced Eric Stoltz.

The role of Marty’s girlfriend, Jennifer Parker (played by Claudia Wells), originally went to actress Melora Hardin.

Wired caught up with Hardin and asked her about her short-lived BTTF experience, which ended before she could shoot a single scene.

She says Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis told her, “Unfortunately we had to let Eric go and we think you’re too tall for the new guy we cast. His name is Michael J. Fox, but you’ll be towering over him. This has nothing to do with you, we think you’re lovely.”

Hardin went on to a career in TV, and is probably best known as Michael Scott’s crazy love interest, Jan, on The Office. Wells was replaced by Elizabeth Shue as McFly’s girlfriend/wife in the Back to the Future sequels.
