NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has entered a "stagnation region" between the outer edge of our solar system and interstellar space. NASA is calling the craft's new home the "stagnation region" — a kind of "cosmic purgatory" whereby the wind of charged particles emitted from the sun has calmed, the solar system's magnetic field is compacted, and particles of higher energy appear to be leaking out of the solar system and into interstellar space.
According to Ed Stone, Voyager project scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, "Voyager is showing that what is outside is pushing back. We shouldn't have long to wait to find out what the space between stars is really like." Here's how NASA describes it:
