Mammoth-Cloning Plan

Mammoth-Cloning Plan of the Day

Mammoth-Cloning Plan of the Day: Although a Jurassic Park-style dinosaur cloning scenario isn’t possible — at least, not with current specimens — scientists in Russia and Japan think cloning a mammoth might be doable.

Bone marrow found in a mammoth thigh bone in Siberia may contain nuclei that can be injected into elephant egg cells, resulting in embryos with mammoth DNA, according to researchers from a Russian mammoth museum and Japan’s Kinki University.

The Siberian permafrost, now thawing as a result of global warming, has revealed a number of frozen mammoths that scientist previously couldn’t get to, increasing the chances of successfully cloning the more than 10,000-year-old mammals.
