Poo-Flinging Chimp Study of the Day: Most civilized humans look down on the chimpanzee habit of throwing feces, but maybe we’ve misjudged it. A new study says that chimps who throw poop frequently and accurately have more developed left brains than those who don’t.
Chimps are the only animals other than humans that throws objects with a target in mind, and it turns out that throwing is linked with the development of the motor cortex and Broca’s area, a part of the brain related to speech processing in humans.
That led the researchers to suggest that throwing is a precursor to speech development in humans. Indeed, the poop-throwing chimps turned out to be better communicators in their social groups.
Even so, getting hit with flying chimp feces still doesn’t sound all that appealing.
