Earliest Human Paintings of the Day: Archaeologists have determined that paintings of seals in the Cave of Nerja, in Málaga, Spain, are over 42,000 years old, making them the oldest human paintings yet discovered.
Previously, the oldest paintings were thought to have been created by modern humans about 32,000 years ago, but the Cave or Nerja seals are so old that they could only have been made by neanderthals.
There has been no evidence of Homo sapiens near that part of Spain, and neanderthals are believed to have eaten seals, so it makes sense that they would choose the animals as subject matter.
After the jump: a better look at the historic paintings.
