Lazy College Senior in the House
(College | Illinois, USA)
(I’m a librarian in a university library. It’s almost 5 PM and I’m getting ready to go home.)
Student: “Hi, I have a research paper and I don’t know how to find sources for it.”
Me: “Okay, what’s your topic?”
Student: “It’s [topic].”
Me: “That one might be tough to find a lot of information on. When is the paper due?”
Student: “Midnight.”

Turn an Innocent Bicycle Into a Death Machine With a Bicycle-Mounted Chainsaw
Taking the classic paper route to a whole new level, this innocent bicycle has been fitted with a chainsaw, amusingly attached so if the wheels are turning, the chainsaw is spinning. One might assume this is simply a funny project, but the depth of how-to videos sitting over on YouTube is somewhat astonishing. If only the titular paperboy in Paperboy rode one of these, that skateboarder never would’ve had a chance.

'MURICA
(Retail | Sarasota, FL, USA)
(I’m just stocking the game shelf, when a mother with her kid approaches me.)
Me: “Hello, ma’am, can I help you with something?”"
Customer: “Young man, I was looking at the content on the back of this game box. Is there nudity in this game? It says ‘brief nudity’ on the box. Is this game appropriate for my child?”
(The kid hands me the game. It is a platinum copy of Dead Rising for XBOX 360. The kid looks ten at the oldest.)
Me: “Not that I can recall. Usually, that means people in their underwear. However, I am required to at least warn you that the game contains graphic violence. Are you sure you want to buy this game for your child?”
Customer: “Hmph! He sees enough violence on TV. I just want to know if there is nudity in the game!” *storms away with the game for her kid*

Pirate Bay Changes of the Day
Pirate Bay Changes of the Day: On February 29th, the Pirate Bay will delete all torrents shared by more than 10 people. The move isn’t a result of some new legal threat to the torrent site, it’s just part of the switch from .torrent files to magnet links.
Magnet links mean that the contents of .torrent files themselves will be hosted by users, not by The Pirate Bay, which frees up server space and bandwidth for the site — and makes it possible to download the entire Pirate Bay in one 90 MB zip file.
All .torrent files will eventually be dropped in favor of magnet links, but The Pirate Bay is starting with the most popular torrents first because files shared by less than 10 people are slower to start via magnet link.
So, although the technology is slightly different, it will still be the same old Pirate Bay.
DIY Airsoft Machine Gun of the Day
DIY Airsoft Machine Gun of the Day: YouTuber Nighthawkinlight spent around $15 to make an airsoft machine gun from a soda bottle, and his DIY project unleashes more pellets per second than pretty much any store-bought model.
The parts are all cheap and easy to get, but the project does require access to an air compressor. In case you don’t have one of those just lying around the house, Nighthawkinlight plans to release instructions for a compressor-less model of the gun soon.
And after that, he plans to introduce a backpack-mounted air chamber to create an Airsoft “flamethrower.”

Earliest Human Paintings of the Day
Earliest Human Paintings of the Day: Archaeologists have determined that paintings of seals in the Cave of Nerja, in Málaga, Spain, are over 42,000 years old, making them the oldest human paintings yet discovered.
Previously, the oldest paintings were thought to have been created by modern humans about 32,000 years ago, but the Cave or Nerja seals are so old that they could only have been made by neanderthals.
There has been no evidence of Homo sapiens near that part of Spain, and neanderthals are believed to have eaten seals, so it makes sense that they would choose the animals as subject matter.
After the jump: a better look at the historic paintings.

How to Make Your Facebook Cover Look Extra Awesome
Hey, remember those clever image combinations that particularly festidious Facebook users put in place during the last major overhaul to the social networking site? Well, because of Timeline, all of those are going to be completely messed up. Thankfully, the new enormous “cover” image at the top of the redesigned user pages has ample opportunities for image shenanigans. If you’re keen to try something like you see above, check out the instructions after the break.
Before you start, it’s important to note that the “cover” image is 851 x 314 pixels, and the inset avatar image is 180 x 180, reduced to 125 x 125 pixels. According to Nico, here’s how you can give your new Timeline a splash of something special.
After the download unzip the file and open fb_timeline_template.psdIn the layers folder “personalization” do your personalisationThat’s it! You’ll be impressing all your Facebook friends in no time. Then hide the layer “overlay” and create two separate pictures (use the guides or the layers “avatar” and “header” for the sizes of the pictures)
Upload them and choose it as avatar and title picture.

Man Rescued From Stuck Elevator, Gets Stuck In Another Elevator Immediately Afterward
A Chicago man found himself trapped in an elevator between the 21st and 22nd floors of the massive 49 floor condo development near Millenium Park. Fortunately, he was quickly rescued by a firefighter and ushered into the building’s second elevator. Unfortunately, once inside, both rescuer and rescuee found that they were trapped once again. Clearly, neither of them was going to see the end of the Super Bowl.
As is, apparently, the procedure in these circumstances, a firefighter went up in an adjoining elevator to rescue the trapped man. This might get a bit confusing, so we’ll just say that the elevator with the trapped man in it is “Elevator A” and the one carrying the firefighter is “Elevator B.” Once Elevator B was in position, the firefighter climbed up through a hatch in the ceiling. From there he was able to get over to Elevator A and transfer the man to Elevator B.
And then Elevator B failed, leaving both men stuck. Worse yet, the building apparently only had two elevators, meaning that there was no obvious way to stage a second rescue. The desperation was evident, as the firefighters considered breaking through a brick wall and repelling down to Elevator B from above.
Thankfully, an Otis Elevator engineer managed to reset the errant people-carrying boxes and was able to operate them manually. Which might be too bad, since I doubt firefighters get the chance to break through too many brick walls when lives are not immediately on the line. Regardless, this is yet another reminder that we should all probably just take the stairs.

German agency recommends Chrome to keep PC users safe
Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has released its best practice recommendations for PC users, and those of you in-tune with the browser wars will be interested to hear that the agency chose Chrome as the safest option. The BSI cites the browser's built-in sandboxing, auto-updating, and bundled (always-up-to-date) Adobe Flash player in its decision. While people in many countries decide to switch from the default Internet Explorer, those in Germany (and the rest of Europe) have to choose which browser to use by default the very first time they turn on their machines, thanks to an anti-monopoly settlement between Microsoft and the European Commission in 2009.

A Shocking Visualization of Every Earthquake Around Japan in 2011
For those of us observing at a distance, the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last year seemed like a singular, horrible event. However, this visualization created by StoryMonoroch shows that it was, rather, a shocking surge in geologic activity. Using red circles and sound effects to indicate the magnitude and depth of each earthquake, this video is a sobering reminder of the powerful forces at work on our planet. See the video, after the break.
To get a larger perspective, watch the worldwide earthquake survey for last year.

Year of the Storm
Neue Gesetze in Schweden wollen Piratebay an den Kragen. Ein cooler Text von den Piratebay Jungs wieso man diese Gesetze NICHT unterstützen darf!
2012 is the year of the storm.
The Pirate Bay will reach an age of 9 years. Experiencing raids, espionage and death threats, we're still here. We've been through hell and back and it has made us tougher than ever.
The people running the site has changed during the years. No sane human being would put up with this kind of pressure for 8 years in a row. An insane hobby that takes time from our families, our work (sorry boss) and our studies.
What binds us all together is a strong belief that what we do is good. That it is something we one day can tell our grandchildren about with pride. People from all over the world confirm this. We read testimonials from people in Syria longing for freedom, thanking us for what we provide. We receive more than 100 visits daily from North Korea and we sure know that they need it. If there's something that will bring peace to this world it is the understanding and appreciation of your fellow man. What better way to do that than with this vast library of culture?
With this said, we hear news from our old admins that they have received a verdict in Sweden. Our 3 friends and blood brothers have been sentenced to prison. This might sound worse than it is. Since no one of them no longer lives in Sweden, they won't go to jail. They are as free today as they were yesterday.
But what enrages us to our inner core is that the system, the empire, the governments, are still allowed to try to boss you and us around with one law crazier than the other. Do you think they will stop with SOPA/ACTA/PIPA? They will not. Because you won't stop sharing those files. Because we will not stay down. Because no one can turn back time. Together, we are the iron that hardens with each strike.
In this year of the storm, the winners will build windmills and the losers will raise shelters. So flex your muscles, fellow pirates, and give power to us all! Build more sites! More nets! More protocols! Scream louder than ever and take it to the next level!
epic!
Wikipedia has a List of Lists of Lists, Which Lists Itself and a Separate List of Lists
Wikipedia’s innumerable lists is already the stuff of legends. And yet still amidst the back alleys, we hear whispers of lists of lists — strange, higher planes of existence which float above everything. But it has transpired that there is still another level; a greater plateau of enlightenment. Friends, believe me when I say that Wikipedia has a List of Lists of Lists. And, most beautifully, it not only links to a list of lists, but also to itself. This, dear readers, is the information singularity. Wikipedia has attained nirvana.
